Split tunneling lets you pick apps that connect directly instead, and the Internet Kill Switch cuts traffic if the tunnel drops. NordVPN's support center says the kill switch has the highest priority, so an app you excluded from the tunnel can still lose its connection when the kill switch is on. That's a real limit for daily work, but it's clearly enough to check whether the tunnel, kill switch and DNS leak protection behave on your laptop.

VPN Plus is where the security features sit. Secure Core sends traffic through a hardened entry server in Iceland, Switzerland or Sweden before the exit server, so a compromised exit server doesn't see your real IP. It won't fix an infected laptop, though. NetShield blocks ads, trackers and malware at the DNS level. The Stealth protocol wraps WireGuard in TLS for networks that block VPN traffic. An admin can enforce Always On VPN, which blocks the device's internet when the tunnel drops and can't be switched off by the user. Device Posture Security checks the operating system, updates, jailbreak or root status, unknown devices and location, then notifies or blocks.

The tiers matter. First, the kill switch: Windscribe, PIA and NordLayer can keep blocking traffic when the tunnel is down, while a basic kill switch only acts while the app is running. Second, the refund window: it ranges from 7 business days at Windscribe to 45 days on CyberGhost's long plans, so schedule the test before you prepay. You can't get the money back once the window's closed.

What a VPN doesn't protect

A VPN doesn't make a compromised device safe, stop credential phishing or verify a company domain's email authentication. It moves the network trust boundary toward the VPN provider, so provider trust and device security still matter. Audits help here, but you've got to read the date and scope: a no-logs review of server configuration on one date isn't a guarantee for every later day.

Domain monitoring is separate VPN subscriptions don't validate SPF, DMARC, MX, NS or CAA.
